Boycott Facebook?

Let me just say it, I’m of the opinion I should boycott Facebook. Here’s why:

The behemoth social network that known as Facebook is suing the Northbrook, Illinois-based educator’s website Teachbook.

Facebook takes issue with their use of the word “book” which, according to the lawsuit, they claim infringes on their brand.

Source: NBC CHICAGO

It’s not just because I think it’s silly to think that Facebook can claim that any site with “book” in it can in theory be shut down because they say so, it’s because Facebook recently crossed the 500million member mark and teach book recently crossed the 47 member mark. That’s right folks Facebook has 499,999,953 more members. And what is even more annoying about this whole suit? I know a lot of teachers in my area (in Northern Illinois) and they aren’t even allowed to have a Facebook/Myspace page.

So Facebook is suing a company who isn’t really even competing for the same customers? How does that even make sense?

Sure Facebook is big and powerful, I mean even my Dad is on it, and they feel like they should protect their trademarks but that isn’t really happening in this case. They are competiting for a limited demographic that partially cannot even access Facebook or they risk losing their jobs.

It would seem to me that if anyone rules that Facebook owns the word book as a part of their copyrights that the whole world is going to shit.

I mean where does it stop? Can I no longer go out and buy a “book” from a “bookstore”? Are we going to have to start calling them something different? How lame is that? “I’m going to buy a papery thing with words.”

So you know what folks…because of this I’m kind of saying screw off Facebook. You may have your copyrights and own the word book – but you’re not goint to have me.

Maybe it’s just me, and it isn’t, but Halo Reach looks like it’s going to be super Bad Ass.

Let’s take a look at some game play shall we?

Now tell me that doesn’t look amazing? As you know Dave and I are huge gamers…while Dave is fairly terrible at Halo we still play it all the time. There are like 5 games I’m excited about for the Holiday Season and it all starts off with this one that is coming out in September.

Anywhooooooo the point of this post is that if you have an XBox Live Account and you’re getting Halo Reach holler at us!

Squirtle

She let you squirtle on her? What a Ho-Oh!

So if you listened to the Top 10 Unsigned Artist Countdown you know Dave and I were thinking out loud that cartoon/X-Men seem to have names that can be used to sound dirty. I mean…this list Could in theory be dirty moves…think about it.

Here’s a little list that we came up with. Enjoy:

The Psylocke (Marvel)
Use in a sentence: “Man I was kind of tired…but we went back to my place and she started to Psylocke.

Juggernaut (Marvel)
Use in a sentence: “I don’t care if she’s fat at this point I’m desperate and I’d still Juggernaut.”

Rockslide (Marvel)
Use in a sentence: “You should see her get that Rockslide.”

Squirtle (Pokemon)
Use in a sentence: “Yeah she let me squirtle on her.

Beedrill (Pokemon)
Use in a sentence: “Let’s just say I’ll Beedrill’n her tonight.”

Jigglypuff (Pokemon)
Use in a sentence: “Dayymmmmmmmnnnnnnnn look at the Jigglypuff.”

Ho-Oh (Pokemon)
Use in a sentence: Man this place is full of Ho-Oh’s!!!!!

Ok…this list sounded better in our heads…and to be fair this is a blog we try to keep clean…we had wayyyyyy better ones but we just didn’t feel like we could post em….

I’d like to go ahead and nominate Abby Sunderland’s parents for the World’s Worst Parents 2010.

I know what you’re thinking, I thought only celebrities could be bad parents…well you’re wrong. Wait until you hear this story if you haven’t yet.

Abby Sunderland is a 16 year old girl. I bolded that one because we’re going to talk about it more in a second. Abby Sunderland is a 16 year old girl who wanted to sail around the world, not one day in the future but right now. Instead of being the type of parents who tell their daughter that it’s not a great idea for a 16 year old girl to drive to the mall let alone sail around the world, they not only supported idea but put the wheels in motion. MaryAnne and Laurence Sunderland, clearly writing a book on parenting, are Abby’s parents and they were on Good Morning America this morning explaining a bit about this great plan. (More on this in a second too.)

Well Abby set sail Jan. 23 from Marina Del Rey, CA. just 24 hours ago, June 10th, Abby’s family lost contact with her somewhere around Australia. Having no idea what happened to her the Australians sent a search plane out to see where she was, because no one had any idea. A quick note here, I kind of just figured she was dead. Seriously. Whenever you lose contact with someone over an immense stretch of ocean you can’t assume that they’re just fine. I’m just saying… Turns out she wasn’t dead, but her little boat was f’d up. The sail/mast was destroyed…rendering the little ship fairly useless and taking out her ability to use the satellite phone to “phone home.”

Now, it appears, the Australians are sending out 3 rescue boats to go get here as she floats along and bring her back to Australia.

Ok.

When’s the last time you would classify 16 year olds as great decision makers? (If you’re Lawrence Sunderland you think your kids always have great ideas…and sometimes you get “excited.” ” Seriously.) Abby’s parents think they’re slick by comparing this to letting her get in a car which is “more dangerous.” No. If there were over 1,000,000 teen boaters on the ocean at one time I’d be willing to bet that we’d agree that it’s more dangerous to sail with those kids on the ocean.

I’m not knocking anyone who is 16, but there is a reason there are rules in place and they don’t rule the world. I mean…seriously…does anyone think that we should listen to what 16 year olds say when they come to you with an ass crazy idea? I mean Crazy Larry Sunderland not only didn’t tell her she was an idiot, but he got “excited.”

Shits weird.

I mean…right?

16 year old girl: “Dad, I’m not going to school starting in January, I’m going to sail around the world.”

Dad: “You’re making me excited.”

Tell me that isn’t a weird scenario! Sure…it isn’t this exact scenario…rather a parody…but still, I threw up a little thinking about it.

If you’re a parent sometimes you have to lay down the law. If you’re not willing to lay down the law…maybe you shouldn’t be a parent. Or maybe you can just “pretend” that you’re a good parent by saying “no” then crazy Larry can privately think “That’s an awesome idea!” but not say it out loud so she gets the feeling you agree with her.

Instead Larry said:

“When any of my kids come to me with an ambition, I don’t laugh at it,” said Abby’s father, Laurence Sunderland. “I like to listen to my kids. There was a part of me that was even excited, because she’s jumped into an arena where I know a little bit about it.”

Clearly it’s an area that Larry only knew “…a little bit about…” I guess Larry is kind of an expert in sailing around the world as a teenage girl.

Yup.

Parent. Of. The. Year.

It’s Hump day! Only 3 full days of work until the weekend and we’re all excited!

I’m sure you’ve all sat back and listened to the Unsigned Artist Showcase today but need more!

Well instead of music today I have some neat YouTube videos (At least I think they’re neat)

1) Guillaume Nery base jumping at Dean’s Blue Hole, filmed on breath hold by Julie Gautier

This video is getting SUPER popular…and I have no idea why. It’s a cool video, but as the jumper says it’s a “fiction” shoot. This was shot over the course of 4 days. While there are some fun rumors about this video (he reached the bottom, he actually did this in a competition) none of them are true.

2) Kung Fu Bear in Japan! (UNEDITED)

This like the first video is getting super popular. And it’s a cool video – but I don’t think it’s THAT cool. I do however like it. At first I thought it was a dude in a bear suit…but when he starts eating his foot that kind of killed that theory. And I think this answers one important question: “What do animals do at the zoo all day?” In Japan they train with weapons.

3) Bas Rutten Instructional Vid – the funniest

The funniest part of this video is that if you have the time you should watch the real version of this self defense video. It’s friggin’ hilarious!.

4) The Jenn Sterger Project

Ha…ok…ok…it’s not funny. I wanted it to be…but…it wasn’t. HOWEVER if you go to 1:50 you’ll really be rewarded….And while I’m here I’d like to take a minute to talk about “The Daily Line” on Versus…starring Jenn Sterger! The show is awful. I like all of the ideas about the show, but I just don’t think it came together. I mean you can take any of the 3 (Jenn, Comedian guy, the Italian bookie) and give them their own show that would be miles better. But when you wrap them up with that one host who tries to be funny/smart/whatever and just falls short…it’s hard to enjoy. I feel like that one host is going to say to me…’Yo Bro – you gonna rush in the spring. You can be a D I K like me!’

And that’s all I got.

Enjoy your Wednesday

Before I get started let me be very clear, I’m a Chicago fan, I support all Chicago teams…which happens to include the Blackhawks who are going to beat the Philadelphia Flyers for the Stanley Cup on Wednesday.

Let me start by asking one simple question:

Would you give up 2 World Series Tickets to sleep with this woman?

Susan Finkelstein

Would you give up 2 World Series Tickets to bang this chick?

Here is what I find funniest about this whole thing…she says she’s “scored” tickets in the past this way. So for some Philadelphia fans…the answer to that question was yes.

Next up we have the touching story of a young boy drinking a beer at a Phillies game.

My favorite quote from this story: Police say they are not investigating.

Yeah…that’s fairly standard stuff in Philadelphia.

Kids drinking beer? Cool. Teens running on the field? Fuck no, not cool bro.

I’m going to be honest here, this is the one story that makes me kind of support Philadelphia. You want to run on the field like an ass hat? We’ll tase the piss out of you. That’s a policy I can actually get behind.

And my favorite story of the year from Philadelphia fans…Fat kid pukes on 11 year old girl…still fat.

To be fair the fat kid was from NJ…So you can score another one for Philadelphia fans.

Steve Jobs really did it today. That’s right folks – he managed to fill a room full of Apple fans and impress them with something that they’ve already seen before!

Look I’m not hating on Apple…or the fans of Apple, I am however stating that if you’ve already seen something before don’t act surprised when you get it – everyone can tell. It’s like peeking at your Christmas gifts that were under the tree and then when it came time to open them trying to act surprised…Mom knew…Mom always knows…and you end up getting in more trouble for acting surprised than if you had just acted disappointed. And that my friends is how the Apple fans should have reacted! ‘Way to change the phone up in 3 months Steve!’ That’s what I wanted to hear.

Have no fear the iPhone 4 does seem to have some awesome new features:

- The Same size screen (3.5″) gets an upgrade. It’s now a 940 x 640 pixel display that features 326 pixels an inch! Hooray!
- A longer lasting battery (7 Hours talk, 6 hours web browsing , 10 hours video or 40 hours music!)
- The new A4 chip is what helps make all of that great battery life possible…that and a bigger battery.
- A 5MP camera (up from 3MP for the Iphone 3Gs) with 5x digital zoom and an LED flash.
- HD video recorder. That’s right 720p! Where have I heard this before? Boom take that HTC! Apple’s doing what you do…only…THE EXACT SAME! (Nothing says progress like doing it the exact same…if you ask me)
- 3 axis Gyroscope! If you were like me and said…”Friggin Steve Jobs better throw a gyroscope in there or I’m going to be f’n pissed!” Well he did it!
- Now because we know the iPhone 4 also has a front facing camera EVERYONE knew that there was going to be a video chat. I mean what else is a front facing camera good for? And why else would you talk to someone on the phone other than to see their face. Yup…that feature won’t be annoying at all!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh man this new phone is so awesome you’ll never want to put it down. You’ll want to surf the web and answer emails all day on it!!! Oh…wait…

Let’s talk price. Straight up $299 for the 32 GB version. And by straight up I mean with a 2 year AT&T deal! Sweet! All these great features on the iPhone should help you ignore the fact if you go over 2GB of data usage you’re going to end up paying more. Nothing says fan appreciation like getting on a network that canceled it’s unlimited data plan.

So to review Steve Jobs impressed a room of fans with something they’ve seen before AND managed to slip by the whole AT&T doesn’t allow for new unlimited data usage plan sign ups anymore….

You ever see that one episode of the Simpson’s where Springfield buys a Monorail? Yeah…Steve Jobs sold it to em:

Steve Jobs says the Iphone is Cool!

Steve Jobs says the Iphone is Cool!

So you don’t have an iPhone yet, but you were planning to get one? Good news! You’re screwed.

That’s right AT&T is getting rid of their unlimited data package. Now if you’re new to the “smart” phone game a data plan is, in it’s simpliest terms, how much internet surfing you can do. AT&T used to allow for an unlimited package, which is what I have for my Blackberry on Verizon, but no longer for new users!

The good news is that they are trying to put a positive spin on it by saying that by eliminating this plan they are making the iPhone packages cheaper and more available to everyone…unless of course you go OVER your limit…then things don’t get cheaper at all.

Let’s review for a minute shall we:

- iPhone and iPad do not allow for FLASH on their devices. Flash is a fairly useful thing to have on any device you’re going to be using to browse the internet because a TON of sites use flash in part on their pages.

- If you have the iPhone you must sign up for AT&T service. And AT&T doesn’t allow you to have unlimited data packages any more. You can of course try to unlock your your iPhone.

- An Apple employee decides to leave the NEW iPHONE prototype in a bar! Awesome!

- .m4a’s still suck.

So here’s what we are stuck with. A company that seems to be less and less user friendly each day is teaming with a cell phone services provider who is making things even tougher for new iPhone users to truly enjoy their iPhone as much as they want. If you want to surf the web all day and listen to WestSideWill Radio (and who doesn’t) AT&T is going to make sure that you’re sure you have the data left to enjoy the show.

And Apple just passed Microsoft as the most important tech stock today (based on share price x outstanding shares). $1.00 says Apple gives that title up to Microsoft again in 3 months.

Are there some iPhone competitors that you can check out instead? Absolutely.

In fact there are reports that Google’s Android is outpacing the iPhone in sales.

What’s the moral of this story? The iPhone is starting to slip – I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple release something to get big MO back on their side.
